After the 14 January 2011, taking advantage of the instability caused by the revolution, many Tunisians set off for the Italian coast, by resorting to makeshift craft in order to reach Europe. Several hundred of them were lost on the journey.
For the first time the family members of these people have turned to the Tunisian, Italian and European authorities demanding that the fate of their loved ones be shed. Their fate is still a mystery.
In this section, you will find pictures of these families, with photos of their loved ones who are lost.
The team of the “Missing at the Borders” continue to collect these photographs.
Where are our children?
Every year, thousands of Tunisian people disappear while trying to reach the north coast of the Mediterranean sea.
Until the 90s, Tunisians, as many other citizens from outside the EU, did not require a visa to enter Europe.
Once the Schengen Convention came into force, obtaining a visa has become a real obstacle course for those wishing to migrate. It is nearly impossible for the majority to enter Europe legally, forcing them to risk their lives in a sea crossing, by taking the famous ‘boats of death’. The number of drownings has increased, and the number of victims climbs each day.

For the first time the family members of these people have turned to the Tunisian, Italian and European authorities demanding that the fate of their loved ones be shed. Their fate is still a mystery. The institutions are utterly silent, the Italian and Tunisian authorities pass the blame to each other.
But the families continue to protest in order to have responses and the truth about their missing loved ones at the European borders. They move heaven and earth to ensure that the children, their brothers and husbands, are not forgotten.
“Missing at the borders” is a self-financed project. Your donations will be used to collect further interviews with the families of deceased or missing migrants or victims of forced disappearance. Thank you!
