Morocco has always been a nation characterised by varied, dynamic migratory processes, due to this nation’s strategic location astride the African and European continents.
By some estimates, tens of thousands of migrants of different nationalities are believed to attempt crossing the Mediterranean toward Spain. These people, be they of Sub-Saharan origin or from North-Africa, Central-Africa, the Middle-East, or Asia, share the objective of reaching Spain, notwithstanding the many dangers they are forced to encounter, given the security protocols enacted by Moroccan and Spanish authorities.
In fact, thousands of those who tempted fate for a chance to have a better life, were able to reach the northern shore of the Mediterranean, thus realizing their and their families' dream. Sadly, however, thousands others have drowned, or are missing, or were forcibly disappeared in the Mediterranean Sea, which is now sadly known as “migrants' cemetery”.
Added to this ongoing tragedy, is the pain and suffering of the migrants' families, and of their friends, who, despite numerous attempt to find out the truth, are condemned to living without trusted news about the date of their loved ones.
Boat with 65 Moroccan migrants on board, disappeared October 10th, 2002
During the night of October 10th, 2002, a group of 65 Moroccan migrants from the Eastern region of Morocco, left the beach at Arekmane (Nador province, North-East Morocco) on a dinghy, hoping to reach the coast of Spain.
However, the boat disappeared, and since then, none of their family members or friends were able to have reliable news of the travelers' fate: to this day, nobody knows whether the boat was stopped or sank, nobody knows if the travelers were arrested or if they died.
That day, tragedy struck 65 people, but it also struck their families, condemned to live with the anguish and pain of not knowing the fate of their loved ones, having to live with this immense sadness, broken occasionally by a faint hope to find their missing children again. Since then, the families of the 65 migrants have invested all their resources to find their relatives, to find out the fate of their children, their cousins, their friends. They have tried to get answers to their questions by opening a dialogue with various organs and institutions, both national and international, but to no avail.
These families are joined every day by the families and friends of all those migrants who went missing or were victims of forcible disappearance at border sites or at sea.
The Morocco office of Missing at the Borders is asking for Justice, Truth, and Dignity, by continuing to stand with these families, to get answers for those who disappeared at the borders between European nations, and within those nations.
“Missing at the borders” is a self-financed project. Your donations will be used to collect further interviews with the families of deceased or missing migrants or victims of forced disappearance. Thank you!
